LCD and LED TV's are much alike in hardware, with the exception of the light source. They both use Liquid Crystal Display panels (millions of individual LC shutters arranged in a grid, sandwiched in between two thin sheets of glass), which block or allow light to pass through to produce images. Each shutter is paired with a colored filter to remove all but the red, blue and green portions of the light passing through them. Each shutter-filter pair produces a sub-pixel, so much so that it takes a large group to produce a single pixel (a tiny colored dot in the screen). Despite these similarities, there are several differences that affect the contrast and display qualities of both types of TV sets:

LCDs use CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) as a source of light. These are arranged at the back of the screen.

LEDs use Light-Emitting Diodes, which are arranged in three different ways - Edge lighting, Full-Array lighting and Dynamic "local dimming" lighting.
In Edge lighting, the series of diodes are arranged along the outside edges of the screen. When electricity flows in the circuit, the light from the diodes is distributed across the screen.
In Full-Array lighting, rows of diodes are arranged behind the entire surface of the screen.
In Dynamic lighting, the series of LED's arranged behind the entire surface of the screen can be controlled individually to achieve a "modulated backlight" light pattern.

Because diodes are comparatively smaller in size than fluorescent lamps, LED TV's are slimmer than LCD HDTV's, which allow for more free space.

LED TV's produce lesser heat than LCD TV's because diodes take a longer time to heat up than fluorescent lamps.

LCD and LED TV's are better compared to the older generation of TV's (CRT's and Plasmas) because they produce better image quality and are more energy efficient. However, there are still distinct differences between LCD and LED TV's when it comes to both picture quality and energy efficiency. Here are some examples:

LED HDTVs consume less power than LCD TV's. LCD HDTV's use fluorescent backlights, which generate lesser light compared to the older generation of TV's (CRT's and Plasma TV's). Therefore, in order to produce a better image, more powerful lamps are needed. LED TV's use multiple diodes which consume a lesser amount of electrical energy compared to fluorescent lamps. LED HDTV's produce less environmental pollution than LCD TV's. This is due to the heat emission of the devices when they are turned on. Since it takes a longer time for diodes to heat up than fluorescent lamps, LED TV's are more energy efficient than LCD TV's.

To be clearer on the subject, these are not huge panels like you would think, but very small ones. In the absence of ambient, or "room light," LCD TVs have to use back lighting. The downside is that these panels are not capable of completely blacking out the back lighting for optimum contrast. The up-side of Samsung LED TVs is that the blacks are blacker. The reason for this is that when a light is out, it is out. There is no bleed over from the light next to it. Thus you have a blacker, more clearly defined picture. LED TV uses four colored lights; two green, one blue and one red. Using different combinations of this lighting produces your color spectrum. This blows out the competing LCDs by allowing more vivid color. Samsung HD LCD TV compromised on this when they began installing LED lights for backlighting and it paid off. The product was the color range of LCD with the blackness capability of LED.

Both types suffer from motion blurring, but LCD has lost this war battle marginally-especially at the HD level. The three most common causes for this are:

- Pixels move faster than color can respond.
- The speed of the movie-what speed it was shot in
- The human eye's ability to track speed

The new series of Samsung LCD flat panel addresses this and using a combination of software and firmware, they've been able to increase their refresh rate by four times. In other words, it would be the difference between a flip book and a 35mm home movie projector. Or for the younger generation, it's the same as getting four times the frame rate.

The big differences between LCD and LED are price. Because of it being a newer technology, LED tends to be pricier than LCDs and a bit lighter. Samsung HD LCD TV offers an alternative that is cheaper than LED, has better quality than many traditional LCDs of competitors.

Resolution Versus Screen Size:

Most LED/LCD TVs on the market today ( December 2012 ) suffer from significant resolution distortion once they move from 47 inch up to 55 inch. I originally shopped for a 55 inch 3D HD LED but settled for a 47 inch TV due to the much sharper image quality. Good 55 inch plus TV's do exist but they come at a cost, well outside of my humble budget.

Panasonic Remote Control and Touch Pad:

HDMI CEC - Consumer Electronics Control, for me this is an important feature in the selection and why I ultimately moved from less expensive brands to a Panasonic. The CEC allows the one remote to manage all the devices connected via HDMI - such as Blu-ray Disc players, PVR, Home Theatre, etc

The remote control is one of the best I have come across to date, Fast change between channels and most modalities, the flick back and forth has very little lag time. Please note that the native Internet built into the TV takes about 30 seconds to load up, but switches back to TV and other modes in an instant. Having both a conventional remote control and a touch pad included in the price/package is a real bonus.

Less Expensive Models and Buying Online:

Always view the product prior to buying online or you may be disappointed. Poor resolution and coarse screen pixelation are a common problem with some less expensive brands and models, something that can only be detected by a personal appraisal. Flat panel units with poor resolution and large blocky pixels should to be avoided at all costs.

My original intention was to purchase locally but that has its draw backs - the main being that I usually end up walking out the door with something different than I had original intended.

Pros:

The crystal clear image for both free to air and PC image via HDMI is nothing short of amazing ( Clearly this is dependent on the source being in HD ). Internet Programs such as Google Earth take on a whole new dimension when viewed on this Panasonic 47 inch screen.

4 HDMI and 2 USB ports come in very handy, if you plug a keyboard into the USB plug you will find that it works when in internet mode.

Cons:

Recording with a catch - The one touch recording will only play back on the specific Panasonic TV recorded from. I suspect that this can easily be overcome by adding a separate PVR BOX, but a little bit annoying to say the least.

Native & Extended Warranties:

It Important to check as many warranty details before purchasing, questionable product insurers do exist, I have been caught out twice now, both connected to large well known international brands and retailers, I eventually settled both claims but the situation was annoying and the warranty covering one TV took the best part of 6 months to resolve.

The Overall Experience, Product, Vendor, Shipping - Australia

The Panasonic TV:

Outstanding - 4.5 out of 5 stars

Way better than I has expected, very much a pleasant surprise. I have subtracted half a star due to the restrictive recording issue. I suspect that other well known brands will soon have similar recording policies if not already, these are designed to protect movie ownership rights. The remote control and touch pad are real winners with performance, well above all expectations.
